How to keep a consistent character across AI images

The single most common complaint about AI image tools is that the same person looks different in every picture. It is solvable. The fix is not a magic prompt; it is a workflow: one strong reference, a locked written description, and a model that actually uses image references.

Guide

Why characters drift between generations

Every generation starts from noise. Unless the model is given something to anchor to, it re-invents the face, the hairline, the jaw, the clothing. Text alone is a weak anchor: 'a woman with short dark hair and green eyes' matches millions of faces. Two things narrow it down: a reference image the model can look at, and a description that never changes between prompts.

Models also differ. Some image models accept reference images and weigh them heavily; others accept them and mostly ignore them; a few do not accept them at all. If your tool only exposes one model, you are stuck with whatever that model does.

In practice

The method that works

Start by generating candidates until you get one image where the character is exactly right. That image becomes the reference for everything after it. Then write the character description once, in detail, and paste it verbatim into every prompt: age range, face shape, hair, eye colour, skin, build, signature clothing, anything that identifies them. Change only the scene around it.

Keep the camera consistent for a series: the same lens feel, the same lighting style, the same aspect ratio. A character shot at 35 mm in soft daylight and then at 85 mm under hard studio light will read as two different people even when the face is identical.

Finally, generate in batches and keep only the matches. Even with a reference, one image in four will drift. Throwing those away is part of the process, not a failure of it.

Step by step

How to do it in Vyndexo

Step 1

Create the anchor

In Media Studio, generate the character until one image is exactly right. Save it to the project; this is the reference for every later image.

Step 2

Attach the reference

Add that image as a reference on the next generation and pick a model that supports image references. Vyndexo shows which of its 43 image models accept references, so you do not have to guess.

Step 3

Lock the description

Save the character description in the project prompt notes and reuse it unchanged. Only the scene text changes between generations.

Step 4

Batch and select

Generate four at a time, keep the matches, and send the best new image back in as an additional reference. Consistency improves with every round.

FAQ

Common questions

Which models are best for consistent characters?

Models that accept multiple reference images and weight them strongly. In Vyndexo the model picker marks reference support per model, and the current best options for faces are listed in the Media Studio guide.

Can I reuse a character across image and video?

Yes. Use the final reference image as the first frame or reference for an image-to-video model; the character stays recognisable through the clip.

Does a failed generation cost credits?

No. If a generation fails, nothing is deducted, on any plan.
